Decongestant overdose

Definition:

Poisoning from decongestants.

Poisonous ingredient may include any of the following:

  • pseudoephedrine
  • phenylpropanolamine
  • ephedrine
  • epinephrine
  • naphazoline
  • oxymetazoline
  • tetrahydrozoline
  • xylometazoline
  • phenylephrine

Note: This list may not be all inclusive.

Where found:

  • nasal decongestant sprays and solutions (such as Afrin, Neo-Synephrine, Vicks Vatronol, Vicks Sinex)
  • oral (taken by mouth) decongestants (such as Sudafed, Novafed)
  • any allergy preparations (Dimetapp, Actifed, Sudafed)
  • some weight loss medications (Dexatrim, control, Acutrim)
  • diet aids (Dexatrim)
