Knee joint replacement

Alternative names:

knee arthroplasty; total knee joint replacement

Expectations after surgery:

Results with a knee prosthesis have been excellent. The operation relieves pain symptoms and most patients (over 80%) need no help for walking.

Convalescence:

The hospital stay is relatively short. The recovery period varies from patient to patient. Move legs often to reduce the risk of deep venous thrombosis. It may be necessary to use crutches for at least 3 months after surgery. Walking exercises can start 2 to 3 weeks after surgery. At home, it may be necessary to use self-help devices, such as raised toilet seats, to maintain a safe range of motion. Physical therapy will be initiated in the hospital. However, it may be necessary to continue treatments after release from the hospital. Avoid vigorous sports such tennis, skiing, or contact sports.
