Overview

Bullae

Definition:

Large blisters; thin walled sacs greater than 10 millimeters in diameter.

Bullae that are filled with clear fluid can occur on the skin (they look like other blisters but are larger). Bullae can occur on the lungs (they also called "blebs"), in which case they are filled with air. These are usually discovered on a chest X-ray and are a common finding in peoples with emphysema. Occasionally young people have bullae at the top of their lungs, which rupture to cause spontaneous pneumothorax.
