25-hydroxy vitamin D
Alternative names:
25-OH vitamin D
Normal values:
The normal range is 16.0 to 74.0 ng/ml.
Note: ng/ml = nanograms per milliliter
What abnormal results mean:
Since hydroxylation of 25-hydroxy vitamin D to 1,25-dihydroxy vitamin D takes place in the kidneys, the accumulation of 25-hydroxy vitamin D is an indication of kidney disease. If this condition is allowed to persist, the affected individual will develop secondary hyperparathyroidism. This situation can be avoided by the injection of 1,25-dihydroxy vitamin D.
