How the test is performed:
The test is performed by paracentesis, a needle aspiration of the peritoneal cavity. A collection of fluid is sent to the laboratory for analysis and culture preparation. The sample is examined regularly for the growth of microorganisms.

How the test will feel:
There is a stinging sensation from the anesthetic. There will be a feeling of pressure as the needle is inserted. If a large amount of fluid is withdrawn, you may have a feeling of dizziness or lightheadedness. Tell the health care provider if you feel dizzy.

The test is done to determine the cause of ascites, fluid accumulation in the peritoneal space.
