This test is only performed when there is an abnormal lesion (abnormal tissue area).

What abnormal results mean:

• histoplasmosis
• fungal infections (such as Candida)
• viral infections (such as Herpes simplex)
• cancer of the oropharynx (such as squamous cell carcinoma)
