Multiple Endocrine Neoplasia (MEN) I
Alternative names:
Wermer's syndrome
Treatment:
Surgical removal of the affected gland is the treatment of choice, although radiation therapy can also be used for pituitary tumors. Hormonal replacement therapy is indicated when glands are removed or secretion is inadequate. Recurrent gastric ulcers related to this disorder have been treated by a total gastrectomy (surgical removal of the stomach).
Expectations (prognosis):
Pituitary and parathyroid tumors are usually benign, but pancreatic tumors are frequently malignant (cancerous). The symptoms of peptic ulcer disease, hypoglycemia, hypercalcemia, or pituitary dysfunction should respond to treatment.
Complications:
Recurrent tumors may develop
