Hereditary ovalocytosis
Definition:
Also known as hereditary elliptocytosis. An inherited condition in which the normally round red blood cells assume a slightly oval or elliptical shape. This condition is associated with a mild hemolytic anemia. The disease is occasionally treated by removal of the spleen (splenectomy).
