Skin lesion of Blastomycosis

Symptoms:

  • skin lesion
    • small
    • papule, pustule, nodule, plaque
    • under the skin (subcutaneous)
    • abrupt downward sloping border
    • located on the legs, arms, hands, or face (most commonly)
    • surface appearance rough and wart-like
    • may ulcerate or erode
    • usually extend, leaving a central scar

Signs and tests:

The diagnosis is primarily based on the appearance of the lesion and substantiated by a history of residence in a relevant geographical area.

The diagnosis of infection with Blastomyces may be confirmed by skin biopsy. A CBC may show signs of infection, such as elevated WBC, elevated sedimentation rate, and anemia (nonspecific).
