A generalized anxiety disorder is the most common type of anxiety disorder. It is characterized by excessive anxiety and worry about 2 or more life circumstances for a period of 6 months or longer. The exact cause of this disorder may be unknown. Hyperventilation, excessive caffeine intake, life situations, or nonadaptive behavior acquired through learning may be causes. The disorder may start at any time, and a history of excessive worry is common. It affects men and women equally.
