Hypospadias
Treatment:
Infants with hypospadias should not be circumcised. The foreskin should be preserved for later possible surgical repair. Surgery is usually completed before the child starts school. The penis is straightened and the hypospadias defect is corrected surgically using tissue grafts obtained from the intact foreskin.
Expectations (prognosis):
Results after surgery are typically good, both cosmetically and functionally.
Complications:
If untreated, there may be difficulty with toilet training in children; and problems with sexual intercourse when an adult.
Calling your health care provider:
Typically a child is diagnosed with hypospadias while still a newborn. If you notice your child's penile opening is abnormally located, or if the penis becomes curved during erection (erections are common with infant boys), call your health care provider.
