Hereditary angioedema

Treatment:

Avoiding trauma and precipitating factors may decrease the number of attacks of angioedema. Antihistamines may be of some benefit in reducing symptoms; they block the action of chemicals (kinins) that cause tissue swelling.

Expectations (prognosis):

Prompt treatment of every attack may allow a good outcome. The disorder can be life-threatening.

Complications:

Obstruction of the airway may be fatal.

Calling your health care provider:

Call your health care provider if you are considering having children and would like some additional information about this disorder, or if you are experiencing a group of the above symptoms.

Swelling of the airway is a life-threatening emergency. If you are having difficulty breathing due to swelling, call an emergency service in your area immediately.
