Definition:
A condition occurring in young children, characterized by impairment in social interactions and the development of restricted repetitive patterns of behavior.
Causes, incidence, and risk factors:
This disorder was labeled "Autistic Psychopathy" by Hans Asperger in 1944. The cause is unknown. There is a possible relation to autistic disorder (autism). The child with Asperger's disorder exhibits below-average nonverbal communication gestures, fails to develop peer relationships, has an inability to express pleasure in other people's happiness, and lacks social and emotional reciprocity.
