Fetal transfusion syndrome

Alternative names:

twin-to-twin transfusion

Treatment:

The goal of treatment is to treat each child's problem.

The donor twin may be anemic enough to need a blood transfusion.

The recipient twin may need to have the volume of fluid reduced (this may involve a reduction transfusion). Medications such as digoxin - oral (digitalis) may be needed to treat heart failure in this child. A digoxin level will need to be tested at regular intervals if this medication is needed to treat heart failure in the recipient twin.

Expectations (prognosis):

If the twin-to-twin transfusion is mild, full recovery is expected for both babies.

Complications:

  • the death of either twin
