Rubella Syndrome

Overview   Symptoms   Treatment   Prevention

Rubella syndrome

Alternative names:

congenital rubella

Treatment:

There is no specific treatment for rubella syndrome. Care involves appropriate treatment of affected systems. Hearing deficits are treated with hearing aids, speech therapy and appropriate schooling. Cardiac lesions may require surgery. Visual abnormalities should be treated to provide the best visual acuity. Severely retarded infants may require institutionalization.

Expectations (prognosis):

Many aspects of rubella syndrome can be improved as noted in treatment. Little can be done for a severely damaged central nervous system, and severe mental retardation may require custodial care.

Complications:

Individual lesions described above may have their own complications. See cardiac lesions under their own heading.
