Fetus (12 weeks old)

Overview

Gestational age

Alternative names:
fetal age; gestation

Information:

Definition:
The period between conception and birth of a baby, during which the fetus grows and develops inside the mother's uterus.

Gestational age is the time since conception, and developmental level, of a fetus or newborn infant.

Other considerations:
The age of the fetus or newborn infant is usually expressed in numbers of weeks. The average, normal gestational age of a mature fetus at birth is around 40 weeks.

Determining the gestational age of the fetus or infant includes assessing his weight, length, head circumference, condition of his skin, hair, reflexes, muscle tone, posture, and vital signs.

Determination of gestational age is an important factor in planning appropriate care for the fetus or infant. It provides important information regarding expected or potential problems and directly impacts the medical treatment plan for the baby.
