Overview   Recovery   Risks

Mastectomy

Alternative names:

breast removal surgery

Expectations after surgery:

The earlier a diagnosis of breast cancer is made, the more effective the treatment. Breast cancer is the leading cause of death in women age 40 to 44. Screening for breast cancer with X-ray mammography is highly recommended, especially in women over 40. Most breast lumps are diagnosed by the patients. Treatment as early as possible offers the best chance of cure for breast cancer (over 85% of breast cancer cases are cured). Breast reconstruction following or during mastectomy can help restore a normal appearance.

In addition to surgery, hormonal, radiation, and chemotherapy (drugs) may be given to prevent further spread of cancer.

Convalescence:

The hospital stay varies from 2 to 10 days depending on the type of surgery.
