Movement, uncontrolled - slow
Alternative names:
arm and leg movements - uncontrollable; athetoid movements; athetosis; choreoathetosis; dystonia; involuntary slow and twisting movements; leg and arm movements - uncontrollable; slow involuntary movements of large muscle groups
Definition:
An impairment of the muscle tone (usually in large muscle groups), causing slow involuntary contractions of the head, limbs, trunk, or neck.
Considerations:
The slow sinuous twisting movements of muscles (athetosis) may be caused by a number of conditions, including cerebral palsy, encephalitis, drug side effects, hepatic encephalopathy, and Huntington's chorea.
The abnormal movement may be reduced or disappear during sleep but is worsened by exercise (such as walking) and emotional stress. Abnormal and sometimes grotesque postures may result from this condition.
Common causes:
There are many other causes of uncontrolled-slow movement. The list of all possible causes can be extensive and include unlikely diseases and medications. Furthermore, the list will vary based on age and gender of the individual as well as on the specific characteristics of the symptom such as location, quality, time course, aggravating factors, relieving factors, and associated complaints. Use the Symptom Analysis option to explore the possible explanations for this symptom occurring alone or in combination with other problems.
