Normal values:
- males: 29 to 62 mg/dl
- females: 34 to 82 mg/dl
Normal level of HDL are somewhat higher in premenopausal females; estrogen seems to stimulate the liver to synthesize and secrete more HDL. Regular, vigorous exercise can increase HDL levels somewhat.
Note: mg/dl = milligrams per deciliter
What abnormal results mean:
Decreased HDL levels may indicate an increased risk of atherosclerotic heart disease.
