Milk-alkali syndrome
Definition:
A condition of metabolic acidosis caused by the consumption of excessive amounts of milk (high calcium intake) and soluble alkali (from antacids, especially sodium bicarbonate) over a prolonged period of time. Continued consumption of milk and antacids together can cause calcium deposits in the kidneys and other tissues. This condition is often found as a side effect of treating a peptic ulcer. Nausea, headache, weakness, and kidney damage may result.
