Tricuspid atresia

Symptoms:

• cyanosis (bluish discoloration of the skin)
• low exercise tolerance
• easy fatigability
• shortness of breath (dyspnea) with exertion
• clubbing of the fingers or toes

Signs and tests:

This condition is often discovered on routine examination of the baby following birth. Cyanosis may be present from birth. A heart murmur is generally present at birth and may increase in loudness over several months.

Tests (and findings) include:

• ECG (left ventricular hypertrophy)
• echocardiogram (absent mitral valve)
• chest X-ray (heart enlargement suggestive of left ventricular hypertrophy)
• cardiac catheterization
